A violent domestic dispute in Lang’ata has left a family shattered after a 20-year-old man allegedly stabbed his father to death following an argument over how ugali was being prepared. The incident, which occurred in Mugumoini location, has sparked shock and concern among residents and local leaders as police continue investigations.
Joseph Okello, aged 70, died at the scene after a confrontation with his son, Peter Olwenye. According to accounts recorded by investigators, the disagreement began inside their home during the preparation of ugali, a common staple meal in many Kenyan households. What started as a correction over cooking quickly escalated into a fatal encounter.
Witnesses told police that the deceased questioned his son’s decision to start preparing ugali using water that had not fully boiled. The father reportedly challenged the method, insisting it was improper. The exchange grew tense as emotions flared, eventually turning physical. In the course of the confrontation, the son is alleged to have attacked his father with a knife.
What led to the fatal ugali dispute in Mugumoini?
Residents familiar with the family described the argument as sudden but intense. The disagreement reportedly escalated after the father criticized the logic behind his son’s cooking process. What followed was a violent altercation that ended with Joseph Okello sustaining multiple stab wounds.
Mugumoini Senior Chief George Mukuria confirmed the incident and said the suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack. He added that there were indications the young man may have been under the influence of drugs at the time, although this will be confirmed through ongoing investigations. The chief also stated that the victim suffered stab wounds to the back and neck and died on the spot before any help could arrive.
The incident has raised broader concerns within the community about unresolved domestic conflicts, substance abuse, and how minor disagreements can spiral into irreversible tragedy when tempers are not controlled.
How was the suspect arrested and what happens next?
Following the attack, village elders and local youths mobilized quickly to track down the suspect. Their search led them to the Soweto area, where Peter Olwenye was found hiding. He was apprehended and handed over to officers from Lang’ata Police Station who were on patrol in the area.
Police have since taken the suspect into custody as investigations continue. Authorities are expected to record statements from witnesses and family members as they piece together the events that led to the killing. The role of possible drug use will also be examined as part of the inquiry.
Meanwhile, the body of Joseph Okello was taken to Nairobi Funeral Home, formerly City Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination. The autopsy results will be key in confirming the cause of death and supporting the case as it proceeds through the justice system.
The killing has left Mugumoini residents shaken, with many describing the incident as a painful reminder of how quickly domestic disagreements can turn deadly. Local administrators have urged families to seek peaceful ways of resolving conflicts and encouraged community members to report early signs of violence or substance abuse before situations escalate beyond control.
