Man breaks into US Vice President JD Vance’s home after an overnight security incident that led to a swift law enforcement response in Ohio. The attempted break-in occurred in the early hours of Monday, January 5, 2025, at Vance’s private residence in Cincinnati, just a day after the vice president had returned to Washington, D.C. Authorities confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
JD Vance publicly addressed the situation later that day, thanking both the Secret Service and local police for their quick action. In a post shared on X, he described the suspect and the nature of the attack, while also acknowledging messages of concern from the public. “I appreciate everyone’s well-wishes about the attack at our home. As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows. I’m grateful to the Secret Service and the Cincinnati police for responding quickly,” Vance wrote.
The US Secret Service confirmed that one adult male was arrested shortly after midnight for damaging property linked to the vice president’s residence. According to a statement, the suspect broke multiple exterior windows. The agency noted that it is coordinating closely with the Cincinnati Police Department and the US Attorney’s Office as officials review potential charges. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said the process is ongoing and emphasized inter-agency cooperation.
What happened during the attempted break-in at JD Vance’s home?
Local outlet WLWT reported that Vance had spent the previous week at the Ohio River-facing residence before leaving on Sunday afternoon. The news channel later published a photograph showing visible damage to at least four panes of glass on what appeared to be a ground-floor window. After reports of the damage, Secret Service agents and Cincinnati police secured the East Walnut Hills neighborhood property for several hours.
Further details emerged from unnamed law enforcement sources who spoke to the Associated Press. According to those accounts, Secret Service agents heard a loud noise around midnight and quickly discovered a man who had broken a window using a hammer and was attempting to enter the house. One official added that the suspect also vandalized a Secret Service vehicle while moving up the driveway toward the home.
Vance later criticized media coverage of the incident, particularly the publication of images showing damage to the residence. He called for greater consideration of his family’s privacy, especially where his children are concerned. “One request to the media: we try to protect our kids as much as possible from the realities of this life of public service. In that light, I am sceptical of the news value of plastering images of our home with holes in the windows.”

How does this incident fit into rising security concerns for US politicians?
As vice president, Vance receives continuous personal protection from the Secret Service, though security measures at his private home change depending on his travel schedule. This incident comes amid heightened awareness around the safety of public officials and their families. In recent years, several violent attacks have targeted politicians at their homes, prompting many to reassess residential security arrangements.
The concern intensified after the June 2025 killing of Minnesota state legislator Melissa Hortman and her husband at their Minneapolis home, as well as an attack on another Democratic lawmaker and his wife in the same city that night. Earlier, in October 2024, a man received a 30-year prison sentence for attacking Paul Pelosi, husband of former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, with a hammer at their California residence.
