Closer And Closer: Guardiola Praises Foden’s Brilliance as Man City Turn Up Heat on Arsenal

Manchester City are not backing down in the Premier League title race, and once again Phil Foden reminded everyone why he remains one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted players.

City secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad on Wednesday night, moving within touching distance of Arsenal at the top of the table. But beyond the scoreline, it was Foden’s magic moment that had fans talking online long after the final whistle.

The England star produced a clever backheel assist that unlocked Palace’s stubborn defence and completely changed the flow of the game. Guardiola later admitted that moments like those are impossible to coach.

Foden Delivers When City Needed Inspiration

For close to 30 minutes, Crystal Palace frustrated City with a compact defensive setup. It looked like one of those nights where Guardiola’s side would struggle to find space.

Then Foden stepped in.

The midfielder received the ball in a tight area before producing a sharp backheel pass into Antoine Semenyo, who calmly buried the opener. The Etihad erupted immediately, with many fans comparing the move to classic street football creativity.

That assist also marked Foden’s 100th Premier League goal involvement. Minutes later, he added another contribution after helping create Omar Marmoush’s goal before Savinho wrapped up the victory late in the game.

Speaking after the match, Guardiola praised Foden’s natural talent and ability to produce moments that go beyond tactics.

According to the City boss, some situations cannot be prepared for during training sessions or tactical meetings. He explained that players like Foden create something special from nothing, especially in small spaces where matches are often decided.

Guardiola Loving Foden’s New Midfield Role?

One interesting talking point from the match was Foden operating deeper in midfield alongside Bernardo Silva.

Normally known for his attacking role near the box, Foden showed another side of his game. Guardiola revealed that the academy graduate had already impressed him in a similar position during the recent Brentford game.

The Spanish coach said what impressed him most was Foden’s work rate and discipline. He explained that although the player is naturally creative, he also runs hard, helps defensively, and understands how to support teammates in difficult moments.

Still, Guardiola made it clear that Foden becomes most dangerous when he gets closer to goal. That combination of energy, creativity, and technical quality continues to make him one of City’s key players heading into the final stretch of the season.

Standing Ovation Says It All

When Foden was substituted late in the match, the Etihad crowd rose to applaud him. It was one of those moments that showed how much City fans value him despite a season that has sometimes felt inconsistent.

Guardiola also spoke emotionally about the reception, saying the midfielder deserved the love from supporters because of everything he has contributed over the years.

The City manager insisted Foden still has a huge future at the club and believes he remains one of the most important players in the squad. From winning league titles to delivering in big moments, Guardiola said the midfielder’s contribution has been massive since coming through the academy.

With Arsenal still leading the race, City know every match matters now. But if Foden keeps producing moments like this, the pressure on the Gunners will only continue growing.
