Thirteen people lost their lives in a tragic accident on Sunday afternoon along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway near Kikopey in Gilgil. The crash involved a fourteen-passenger matatu headed to Nakuru and a semi-trailer truck.
According to Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru, the matatu attempted to overtake before colliding head-on with the trailer. “The matatu was overtaking and then it rammed into the trailer, causing 13 fatalities and three others seriously injured,” he confirmed.
The victims who died on the spot were taken to Gilgil Sub-County mortuary, while the injured, including two children, are receiving treatment at Gilgil Hospital. Police reports indicate that the matatu had been privately hired in Nairobi by passengers traveling to attend a family function in Nakuru.
What Caused the Fatal Nakuru-Nairobi Highway Accident?
Investigators are now working to determine the full circumstances that led to the deadly crash. Early findings suggest reckless overtaking by the matatu driver was a key factor. The Nakuru-Nairobi highway, one of Kenya’s busiest and most hazardous roads, has witnessed multiple fatal accidents in recent years.
This latest accident highlights ongoing safety challenges on Kenyan highways. Overcrowded matatus, speeding, and risky overtaking maneuvers continue to claim lives. Authorities, including the police and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to curb the rising death toll.
Families of the victims are now demanding accountability and greater safety measures to prevent such tragedies. The police have confirmed that an investigation into the accident has been launched, with more details expected to be released in the coming days.
