
Morocco secured their place in African football history with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Madagascar in the CHAN 2024 final at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The Atlas Lions, already two-time winners, showed their resilience and pedigree to become the first nation to claim the African Nations Championship crown three times.
How Did Morocco Beat Madagascar in the Final?
The final began with Madagascar shocking the favorites when Clavin Felicite Mantanosoa fired in a half-volley from Nantenaina Razafimahatana’s assist. Morocco responded quickly as Youssef Mehri equalized with a well-placed header from Khalid Baba’s curling cross. Just before halftime, tournament top scorer Oussama Lamlioui gave Morocco the lead with a composed finish, putting the North Africans 2-1 ahead.
Madagascar refused to give in. Coach Romuald Rakotondraibe introduced fresh legs at the restart, and the change brought energy to their attack. The pressure paid off in the 68th minute when T.N. Rakotondraibe leveled the score at 2-2, igniting celebrations among Barea supporters. But Morocco’s determination would not be denied. With 10 minutes left, Lamlioui delivered the decisive blow with a stunning long-range strike that sealed both the trophy and his Golden Boot tally of seven goals.
What Does the Win Mean for Morocco?
Along with the title, Morocco collected KSh 455 million in prize money. This victory added to their previous triumphs in 2018 and 2020, establishing them as the only nation to lift the CHAN trophy three times. Their journey to the crown included eliminating defending champions Senegal in the semifinals, further proving their dominance.
How Did Madagascar Perform Despite the Defeat?
Madagascar’s spirited run earned them admiration across the continent. They eliminated hosts Kenya and overcame Sudan on their path to the final, showing their growing potential in African football.
As the CHAN 2024 curtain closes, the spotlight shifts to AFCON 2027, which Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will co-host. Football fans across Africa now look forward to another major stage where both Morocco and Madagascar will aim to shine against.
