Manchester United finally secured their first Premier League win of the season, edging Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford thanks to a 97th-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty. The victory eased pressure on manager Ruben Amorim, who has faced growing criticism following United’s shock midweek League Cup exit to Grimsby.
How Did United Take the Lead?
United struck first through an own goal when Casemiro’s header bounced off the bar and deflected in off Josh Cullen. Despite early dominance, Amad Diallo wasted a golden chance to extend the lead before Burnley equalised in the 55th minute, with Lyle Foster converting Jacob Bruun Larsen’s cross. United hit back immediately as Bryan Mbeumo connected with Diogo Dalot’s delivery to make it 2-1, marking his first goal since his £65 million move from Brentford.
Why Did Burnley Keep Fighting Back?
Burnley exposed United’s defensive issues once again. A tight offside call denied Foster a second equaliser, but Jaidon Anthony capitalised soon after when goalkeeper Altay Bayindir parried Loum Tchaouna’s shot into his path, making it 2-2. The Clarets’ persistence highlighted United’s ongoing vulnerability at the back and inconsistent goalkeeping choices, with Andre Onana dropped after the Grimsby defeat.
How Did Fernandes Seal the Win?
As the game edged into stoppage time, VAR intervened after Anthony pulled Amad Diallo inside the box. Fernandes, who had missed a crucial penalty against Fulham last week, stepped up under pressure and calmly converted to hand United a dramatic 3-2 victory.
The result moves Manchester United to four points from their opening three league matches and brings relief to Amorim heading into the international break. Burnley, meanwhile, remain on three points but can take encouragement from their attacking resilience at Old Trafford.
