Bungoma Court Chaos as DCI Officer Accidentally Fires Gun, Injuring Five

A shocking incident unfolded on Tuesday, September 16, at the Bungoma Law Courts when a firearm belonging to an officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) accidentally discharged, injuring five people.

What Happened During the Bungoma Shooting?
The firearm went off inside the High Court during the hearing of a criminal case. Among those injured were the officer himself, a Kenya Prisons officer, and three civilians. All five victims were quickly rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital for medical attention.

Judiciary Spokesperson Paul Ndemo confirmed the details in an official statement, noting that the situation was under control. “All court officials as well as members of the public at the Court are safe and there is therefore no need for alarm,” he assured.

What Is the Condition of the Victims?
Ndemo explained that the injured individuals are undergoing treatment and are in stable condition. His statement emphasized that the incident, though serious, should not create panic within the public. He further confirmed that court operations remain unaffected.

Following the incident, the County security team visited the courts to assess the situation and review safety measures. The investigation into how the firearm discharged is ongoing, with authorities expected to provide more clarity in the coming days.

While the event raised immediate concerns, reassurances from the Judiciary highlight that court officials and the public remain safe. The response now shifts toward ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future through stricter handling of firearms within court premises.
