How Were the Suspects Caught?
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made a breakthrough in Nairobi’s ongoing phone theft problem, arresting three suspects linked to a syndicate targeting residents in the Central Business District (CBD). The primary suspect, Victor Kimani, was apprehended while tampering with the IMEI numbers of stolen phones, an illegal method used to erase a device’s identity and make it harder to track.
Following his arrest and questioning, detectives were led to Intermark Business Centre, where Kimani’s suspected accomplices, Marvine Wangundo and Jeremiah Njoroge, were arrested. This location turned out to be a critical operational base for the syndicate.
What Did Police Find in the Raid?
During the raid, investigators recovered more than 70 stolen phones of popular brands, including Samsung, Vivo, Nokia, and M-Kopa. Some of the phones had missing back covers, suggesting attempts to disguise their appearance. In addition to the stolen devices, officers also discovered computer components and other electronics believed to be used in the illegal operation.
All three suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
