Albert Muder: Police Officer James Mukhwana Arrested over Ojwang’s Death

Police Constable James Mukhwana, based at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, has been arrested in connection with the killing of 31-year-old teacher Albert Ojwang. The arrest was carried out by officers from the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) of the National Police Service and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

According to a police report, Constable Mukhwana was taken into custody on June 12, 2025, and is currently being held at Capitol Hill Police Station. He is expected to face murder charges under Section 203, as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code. The arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation into Ojwang’s controversial death, which has triggered public outrage and nationwide protests.

Ojwang was arrested in Homa Bay County by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after he allegedly posted critical remarks on social media. He was later transferred to the Central Police Station in Nairobi. Hours after his arrest, he was taken to Mbagathi Hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival.

The hospital’s report paints a grim picture. Ojwang was brought in at 2:00 a.m., unresponsive and cold to the touch. Medical staff confirmed that he was already deceased when he arrived. His body showed signs of significant trauma. His face was swollen, and there were multiple bruises on his limbs and torso. Blood was visible from his mouth, eyes, and the back of his head, which also had a visible cut in the parieto-occipital area.

These injuries strongly contradicted initial police statements suggesting Ojwang had harmed himself. The arrest of Mukhwana suggests growing pressure on authorities to deliver justice and transparency in the case.
