IG Kanja Confirms DIG Lagat Filed Complaint Leading to Albert Ojwang’s Arrest

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has confirmed that the arrest of the late Albert Ojwang was initiated after a complaint was filed by Deputy Inspector General Eliud Kipkoech Lagat. According to Kanja, DIG Lagat reported Ojwang for defamation, triggering an official investigation.

Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, Kanja stated that the complaint centered around allegations that Ojwang had tarnished Lagat’s name. He emphasized that every Kenyan, regardless of their position, has the right to legal protection.

“There was a complaint launched by the DIG regarding damage to his reputation. Based on that, investigations were underway, as he also has the right to be protected under the law,” Kanja explained.

Ojwang was arrested at his home in Homa Bay County on Saturday and later transferred to Nairobi. The next day, he was reportedly found unconscious in a cell at Central Police Station. Police say he had head injuries allegedly sustained from repeatedly hitting his head against the wall. He was taken to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The circumstances surrounding his death have sparked a public outcry and prompted multiple investigations. IG Kanja assured that a detailed probe is ongoing to uncover the truth behind the incident.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is also involved. Chairperson Isaac Hassan confirmed that investigators have visited the scene and are actively collecting evidence. Hassan acknowledged the grief of Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo, whose emotional account has drawn widespread sympathy. “I saw Mzee Ojwang on TV crying. That pain is real, and we understand it. IPOA will pursue justice for this family,” he promised.

Several officers who were on duty during Ojwang’s detention have been interdicted. They are expected to be questioned to determine what happened between Ojwang’s arrest and his death.

Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has demanded the suspension of DIG Lagat. Gachagua claims Lagat should be held accountable for initiating the arrest over a social media post and alleges that Central and Kamukunji police stations have turned into torture chambers. He questioned the rationale behind Ojwang’s transfer from Homa Bay to Nairobi, calling the move suspicious.

As investigations continue, both public pressure and institutional scrutiny remain high. The case has raised serious concerns about police conduct, detainee safety, and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
