10 Dead in Karai Night Crash on Nairobi-Nakuru Highway

Ten people have died following a tragic road accident at the Karai area on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. The crash occurred around 1:00 am on Monday when a Nairobi-bound Grenline bus collided head-on with a Nakuru-bound Nanyuki Cabs shuttle. Nine people died on the spot—eight from the shuttle and a small child from the bus. By Monday morning, ten deaths were confirmed, with five others in critical condition.

Thirty-five survivors, including five children, were rushed to Naivasha Hospital for treatment. The incident happened near the same spot where former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died weeks ago.

What caused the Karai accident?

Naivasha Sub-County Police Commander Wilson Sigei confirmed that the bus driver was overtaking when he collided with the saloon car. “We are observing this stretch of the road as most drivers are speeding here,” he said. Witnesses reported that a saloon car from Eagol Petrol Station suddenly joined the highway, forcing the bus to swerve and collide head-on.

Passengers on the bus raised concerns about the driver’s condition, saying he appeared drowsy from Nakuru and his driving skills were questionable. Two conductors reportedly accompanied him to help maintain alertness during the journey.

Authorities continue investigating the accident, while the stretch of the Nairobi-Nakuru highway remains under strict observation to prevent further tragedies.
