15 Dead, Including 11 Children, After Boat Capsizes in Ghana

Fifteen people, including eleven children, lost their lives after a boat capsized on Lake Volta in northeastern Ghana on Saturday. The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) confirmed that the victims were traveling from Okuma to Bovime in the Krachi West District of the Oti Region when their vessel overturned.

According to a statement by the GMA, “Tragically, 11 of the deceased were children between the ages of two and 14 years (five males and six females).” The remaining victims were adults, with the oldest being 64 years old. Only four adults survived the accident, which the authority described as “a critical and unacceptable breach of safety standards.”

What Caused the Lake Volta Boat Accident?

Preliminary investigations suggest that the boat was overloaded at the time of the incident. The GMA has since deployed a specialized investigation team that includes naval officers to determine the exact cause of the disaster. The authority also announced that it will establish a high-level investigation committee, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, to examine safety violations and enhance enforcement on the lake.

To prevent future tragedies, the GMA stated it would begin a “sustained lakeside safety enforcement operation” to ensure boats comply with passenger limits and that all passengers wear life jackets.

Why Boat Accidents Are Common on Lake Volta

Boat disasters are sadly frequent on Lake Volta, one of the world’s largest man-made lakes. Many of these accidents result from overloading, poor safety compliance, and collisions with submerged tree stumps. In August, six passengers died in a similar incident, while in May 2023, 18 people lost their lives when their boat struck a submerged tree stump.

The GMA expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, promising action and accountability. It stated that it “remains resolute in unravelling the root causes of this disaster and implementing measures to ensure that no such tragedy ever occurs again.”
