South Africa’s ambassador to France, Emmanuel Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa, was found dead in Paris on September 30, 2025. The 58-year-old diplomat was discovered in the courtyard of the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile, located near Porte Maillot, after being reported missing the previous evening.

According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, Mthethwa had sent a troubling message to his wife before his death and left a note behind. He had been staying on the 22nd floor of the hotel, where investigators noted that the security mechanism of his window had been forced. Authorities confirmed that no signs of struggle or drug use were detected at the scene.

A judicial investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the diplomat’s death. While details remain under review, French officials are working closely with South African representatives to provide clarity.

Mthethwa, widely known in South Africa for his political career before joining the diplomatic service, had only recently been serving in his ambassadorial role in Paris. His sudden passing has sparked shock both at home and abroad.

Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues, friends, and government officials who remembered him as a dedicated public servant. For many, his death represents not only a personal loss but also a moment of national grief.
