The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has officially ruled out foul play in the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo. Following a detailed investigation, the agency confirmed that the incident was a road traffic accident and not linked to any criminal activity.
Cyrus Jirongo, 64, tragically died in the early hours of December 13, 2025, after his vehicle collided head-on with a Climax Coach bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. Reports indicate that Jirongo was driving to his rural home in Lugari when the accident occurred.
What Did the Investigation Reveal?
The DCI conducted a comprehensive probe to establish the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death. Investigators interviewed his closest allies and several individuals who were with him prior to the accident. Statements were recorded from his wife, Ann Lanoi Pertet, the bus driver Tiras Kamau Githinji, the bus conductor Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi, and staff from Eagol Petrol Station, where Jirongo’s car was seen making a U-turn.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, along with politicians Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambuli, voluntarily provided their accounts, detailing their interactions with Jirongo at Karen Oasis restaurant on December 12, 2025. In addition, seven passengers from the bus also came forward to assist in the investigation.
A multi-agency team visited the accident scene, documented physical evidence, recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, and secured the bus manifest along with amateur videos from the crash site. All evidence underwent careful forensic analysis to determine the cause of the incident.
Based on the gathered evidence, the DCI concluded that the accident resulted from road traffic circumstances and found no indication of foul play. The investigation file will now be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further directions following the completion of remaining investigative procedures.
Community Response and Safety Reminder
Cyrus Jirongo was laid to rest on December 30, 2025, at his family homestead in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, beside his parents. In light of the DCI’s findings, authorities have urged the public and political leaders to exercise caution, avoid speculation, and refrain from making statements that could disrupt the investigative process or cause unnecessary public concern.
The DCI’s thorough investigation underscores the importance of evidence-based reporting and patience in the aftermath of high-profile accidents. While the nation mourns Jirongo, officials emphasize responsible communication to maintain public trust and prevent the spread of misinformation.
