Veteran comedian and philanthropist Eric Omondi has shared how the death of his brother Fred has affected him in ways he had never experienced before. Speaking with Chris the Bass on Saturday, December 11, 2025, Omondi reflected on the losses he has endured over the years, including the deaths of his parents and an elder brother. While those losses were deeply painful, he explained that Fred’s passing felt different and continues to weigh heavily on him.
“I have lost very many close people in my family, but Fred ilinihit different,” Omondi said. He revealed that he and Fred shared a close bond, growing up together, entering the entertainment industry side by side, and even moving to Nairobi together in pursuit of their dreams. “I do not know ni kwa sababu tumegrow na Freddy na kwa industry na tulikuja Nairobi pamoja, sijui ni juu tulikuwa close, hiyo ilinipata mbaka wa leo, hizo siku nilikuwa naamka na sema, ‘What ni aje?’” he added.
How Did Eric Omondi Struggle to Accept Fred’s Death?
Omondi has been candid about the difficulty of coming to terms with his brother’s sudden death. During an interview with Galston Antony aired on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, he explained that the loss affected him profoundly and that he has never fully healed because it happened so quickly. He initially struggled to believe it was an accident. “When I was told my brother was dead, I did not believe it was an accident. I went to the hospital and asked, ‘Where did it happen?’ I told them, ‘You killed my brother,’ but they said it was an accident. They took like an hour to take me to the scene. I had to go to the scene and asked, ‘Where is the bodaboda?’ Again, it took like another hour, and they took me to the police station. I saw the boda boda, then I had to look for the driver of the mini bus, that is when I started believing it was an accident,” he said.
Omondi also shared how the circumstances of Fred being on a boda boda at 5:00 a.m. felt unnatural to him. “My usual instincts were that you guys have killed my brother because at that time my activism was at the highest, and I had gone to the parliament like eight times just before my brother’s death. I could not believe it because the coincidence was too much for me.”
Finding Acceptance After Tragedy
The comedian explained that he began to accept the accident once he discovered that the boda boda rider was also being buried. “Until this day, I still feel like was there an eye witness? I looked for the driver of the boda boda and found the driver of the boda boda being buried; that is when I started believing maybe it was an accident,” Omondi shared. “Finally, we accepted that it was an accident, and we buried him.”
Fred Omondi tragically lost his life in a road accident in Nairobi early on Saturday morning, June 15, 2024. For Eric Omondi, the loss remains deeply personal, highlighting the enduring bond between brothers and the difficulty of reconciling sudden tragedy even amidst previous experiences of grief. His story offers a poignant look at the long-lasting emotional impact of losing a loved one, particularly someone with whom he shared both life and career journeys.
