Rapper Nicki Minaj calls for protection for Christians in Nigeria as concerns continue to rise over religiously motivated attacks in parts of the country. Experts and residents note that while some incidents target Christians, the broader insecurity affects people of all backgrounds, making many communities vulnerable regardless of belief or identity. The ongoing violence has shaped global discussions, and Minaj recently stepped into the conversation with a clear message of support for religious freedom.
Why Did Nicki Minaj Speak Out on Nigeria’s Religious Violence?
The Trinidadian-born rapper thanked former U.S. President Donald Trump for his leadership and for calling for urgent action “to defend Christians in Nigeria, to combat extremism and to bring a stop to violence against those who simply want to exercise their natural right to freedom of religion or belief.” Her remarks came during a panel hosted at the U.S. mission to the United Nations, where she appeared alongside U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and several faith leaders.
Minaj became part of the conversation after responding to Trump’s earlier social media post about Nigeria. She wrote, “No group should ever be persecuted for practising their religion.” Her public stance added significant visibility to the issue and aligned her voice with ongoing international concerns.
Pope Leo XIV also weighed in on Sunday through a post on X, noting that Christians face discrimination and persecution in various regions worldwide, including Nigeria, Bangladesh, Mozambique and Sudan. His message highlighted how widespread the issue of religious repression has become, reinforcing the urgency of global advocacy.
Introducing Minaj at the panel, Waltz emphasised her influence, saying, “She steps onto this world stage not as a celebrity but as a witness … to spotlight Nigeria’s persecuted church” for her millions of followers. Minaj admitted she was “very nervous” to speak before the panel but affirmed her commitment to standing up “in the face of injustice” for anyone facing persecution based on their beliefs.
What Message Did Minaj Share About Unity and Religious Freedom?
Minaj explained that her call to protect Christians in Nigeria is not about taking sides or creating division. She stated, “It is about uniting people,” and went on to describe Nigeria as “a beautiful nation with deep faith traditions” that she looks forward to visiting. Her comments reflected a desire to use her platform to foster solidarity rather than deepen fractures.
During her remarks, the rap star made one brief nod to her musical journey, saying that music has taken her around the world and shown her how people connect deeply when a song “touches their soul.” She ended her speech with a resonant message: “Religious freedom means we all sing our faith regardless of who we are, where we live and what we believe.”
Minaj’s involvement has added a powerful cultural voice to an already urgent international conversation. Her statements underline the importance of protecting vulnerable communities while promoting unity and freedom of belief across nations.
