Grief has engulfed a family in Uasin Gishu County and the University of Nairobi (UoN) community following the tragic death of Nicole Jemutai, a first-year student who lost her life while crossing the Nairobi–Thika Superhighway on the evening of October 4.
According to a social media announcement shared by the family, “With regrets and deep sorrow, we announce the untimely and tragic loss of Nicole Jemutai through a grisly road accident on the Nairobi–Thika Superhighway on Saturday evening, October 4, while crossing the road. The late Nicole was the granddaughter of Mathayo Sing’oei (Kapn ‘Gochoch) family of Seiyo Village.”
How are family and friends honoring Nicole’s memory?
Nicole’s death shocked fellow students and her entire community, with tributes pouring in from friends, relatives, and neighbors who described her as bright, kind, and determined. Her photo quickly went viral online, showing her neatly plaited hair, a confident smile, and simple attire that reflected her easygoing personality.
Messages of condolence flooded social media as Kenyans shared in the family’s grief. Joy Kosgei wrote, “RIP 😭😭 Passing my condolences to the entire family and friends. May God comfort you during this difficult moment. Poleni sana.” Jose Chebet added, “May her soul rest in peace and may the family find solace in God during this period of mourning.”
When will Nicole Jemutai be laid to rest?
The family announced that a fundraising event will be held on Saturday, October 11, at her home in Seiyo Village, starting at 2 p.m., to help with funeral expenses. Nicole’s final send-off is scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, at the same home.
As her family and the UoN community continue to mourn, many remember Nicole not only for her academic promise but also for her gentle spirit, selfless nature, and determination to succeed. Her memory remains a reminder of how fragile life can be, and how deeply a single young life can touch many hearts.
