Infotrak: Most Kenyans Say the Country Is on the Wrong Track

Fifty-seven per cent of Kenyans believe the country is moving in the wrong direction, according to the latest Infotrak survey released Thursday. Only 17 per cent of respondents said they were satisfied with the current trajectory, while 21 per cent remained neutral, indicating neither optimism nor dissatisfaction.

The survey, conducted in August with 2,400 participants from across the country, paints a clear picture of growing public concern. Compared to September last year, when 50 per cent felt things were off track, the figure has risen by seven points, showing a decline in confidence about the nation’s outlook.

The issues at the heart of public frustration are clear. A majority, 66 per cent, pointed to the high cost of living as the main challenge, while 30 per cent cited unemployment and 15 per cent blamed poor governance. Another 15 per cent highlighted the government’s failure to deliver on promises under the Social Health Authority (SHA). Researchers noted that the high cost of living remains the most pressing problem, with seven out of ten Kenyans now citing it, an increase compared to last year.

For the minority who expressed satisfaction, peace in the country stood out as the strongest reason, mentioned by 41 per cent. Another 37 per cent pointed to good government performance, while 28 per cent highlighted signs of economic stabilization.

Interestingly, the 2025 survey marks a shift in public concerns, with the high cost of education emerging as a major issue, surpassing health-related worries. This trend reflects the financial strain many households face as they juggle school fees alongside other rising expenses.

The Infotrak findings offer a sobering snapshot of public sentiment. With most Kenyans struggling under economic pressure, dissatisfaction is mounting, leaving policymakers under pressure to address the pressing realities that shape everyday life.
