How did Julius Ledama’s education journey begin?
Julius Ledama, a Nairobi father of three, has proven that determination can break barriers. Born in a humble family of nine children, his path to education was far from smooth. “There was barely enough money for my school fees and also for my siblings. I am the thirdborn and had six other siblings behind me. Money was a challenge in our family, and so I only reached Form Four. There was no money for me to further my education, and even jobs were scarce. However, I told myself that I would do any work that came my way. I joined the security sector in 2016, working with Security Group Africa (SGA),” he explained.

What challenges did he face at university?
Despite financial struggles, Ledama enrolled at the University of Nairobi to pursue a Bachelor of Education in Arts. To support his family and fund his studies, he worked night shifts as a security guard from 6 pm to 6 am, attending evening classes after work. The demanding schedule meant little rest, yet he remained focused on his dream.
Finances often stood in the way, forcing him to defer semesters when fees were unavailable. “It is one of the reasons I graduated quite late because money was not enough at times. I struggled to pay my fees on time, so I had to defer semesters, but I never gave up. I was supposed to graduate in 2022, but better late than never,” he shared.
After seven long years of persistence, Ledama finally graduated, calling it the best moment of his life. “I am so happy, super delighted to have graduated. I waited for this moment for seven long years. I really thank God that my efforts have culminated in this. I cannot express my happiness. It is the best day of my life,” he said.
