What do we know about the discovery?
The body of 35-year-old construction worker Sammy Kyengo was discovered on Saturday morning at the Talanta Sports Stadium in Nairobi, a week after he was reported missing. His wife, Christine, had filed the report on September 6. The remains were found floating in a water sump behind the under-construction terraces, spotted by a colleague preparing the area for plastering around 9:00 a.m.
Investigators at the scene noted visible injuries on the back of Kyengo’s head and neck, with blood coming from his nose and mouth. His phone had been switched off since the day he disappeared.
What concerns are workers and family raising?
Christine Kyengo revealed that her husband had been frustrated over the delayed payment of his wages before his disappearance. “He told me the company had refused to pay them since July. He wanted to claim his money and quit the job,” she said.
The discovery has unsettled workers at the site. “We are shocked and worried. If one of us can disappear and end up dead inside the stadium, in whose hands are we safe?” asked Ivan Bongo, a fellow construction worker.
Family members also spoke of the deep personal loss. His nephew, Paul Kioko, said, “He has been supporting me with school fees and rent. I don’t know how I will manage now.”
What happens next in the investigation?
Scene of Crime investigators from the Nairobi Area processed the site before transferring the body to the Nairobi Funeral Home. An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of death.
Meanwhile, construction work at the stadium was suspended on Saturday as police continue their investigations into the mysterious circumstances surrounding Kyengo’s death.
