Who is eligible to register as a voter?
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that continuous voter registration will officially resume on Monday, August 31, 2026, across all constituencies and Huduma Centres countrywide. The exercise targets three groups: Kenyans who have just turned 18, citizens who have never registered before, and voters who want to transfer their registration details to a different polling station.
To take part, eligible voters must present their original national identity card or a valid Kenyan passport. According to IEBC, “Voter registration will take place at all Constituency IEBC offices and designated County Assembly Wards. Mobile registration teams will also be deployed to reach remote and marginalised areas to ensure inclusivity.”
How can Kenyans register or transfer their details?
For new registrations, individuals will need to visit their nearest constituency IEBC office. Once there, they will be required to fill out Form A, provide biometric data, including fingerprints and a photograph, and then receive an acknowledgement slip. IEBC clarified that this slip is not a voting document, but simply proof of successful registration.
Registered voters also have the option to transfer their details by physically visiting constituency offices with the required identification documents. For Kenyans living abroad, registration will take place in designated IEBC centres located within embassies, consulates, and high commissions where the Commission is accredited.
When does registration close before the General Election?
IEBC has confirmed that continuous voter registration will remain open until 60 days before the 2027 General Election, at which point the law requires its suspension. The Commission urged all eligible Kenyans to take advantage of the opportunity to register early, saying, “The Commission calls upon all eligible Kenyans who are yet to register as voters to take advantage of this opportunity to do so and participate in the electoral processes.”
With the 2027 General Election approaching, this drive forms a key part of IEBC’s preparations to enhance citizen participation and ensure inclusivity in the democratic process.
