“Albert, wake up, Manchester United is playing” Widow’s Emotional Tribute to Late Teacher

It has been two months and two weeks since the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody at the Central Police Station. His passing at just 31, a month shy of his 32nd birthday, continues to leave a void for his widow, Nevnina Onyango, and their three-year-old son.

Ojwang died from assault-related injuries, including head trauma and neck compression, according to reports. He was laid to rest on July 4 at his family home in Nyawango village, Kabondo Kasipul constituency, Homa Bay county. His burial was marked by a deeply emotional ceremony where his coffin was draped with both the Manchester United flag, a reflection of his lifelong passion for the club, and the Kenyan national flag. The latter gesture sparked debate, as civilians are rarely buried with the national flag still intact.

How Did Nevnina Honor Her Husband?

On August 17, a month after the burial, Manchester United played their first Premier League match of the season at Old Trafford. Nevnina, herself a Manchester City supporter, shared a heartbreaking post as she longed for her husband’s presence during the match. “Alberto, wake up, Manchester United is playing,” she wrote. The Red Devils, however, went on to lose 1-0 to Arsenal after a Ricardo Caglafiori goal.

What Has Been the Public Response?

Her words touched many Kenyans online, drawing an outpouring of support. Dorcus Muutu wrote, “Take it easy, you shall meet one day.” Another user, Calvince Anguro, added, “It will be well.” Messages of comfort poured in from others, including Joygal Naomy with “Take heart,” and Melvin Ngoche, who said, “Pole muhiki, with God, is there no blood shall be in vain.”

Ojwang’s family continues to demand justice as his alleged killers remain in remand, yet to be charged. For Nevnina and her son, the fight for accountability carries on, even as they navigate the pain of loss. Meanwhile, supporters and well-wishers continue to stand with the family, reminding them that Albert’s memory lives on.
