Tanzania’s national team pulled off a thrilling win on Wednesday night after Shomari Kapombe netted an 89th-minute goal to secure a 1-0 victory over Mauritania in the CHAN 2024 group stage. The match, played at Dar es Salaam’s Mkapa National Stadium, had been locked in a tense stalemate until the Simba SC veteran broke the deadlock just moments before full time.
The win sees Tanzania extend their lead in Group B, now sitting six points ahead and firmly on track for a spot in the quarter-finals.
How did Burkina Faso vs. CAR game unfold?
In another Group B fixture, Burkina Faso climbed to second place after a heated 4-2 win against debutants Central African Republic (CAR). The game saw an early goal from Patrick Quattara in the 11th minute for Burkina Faso, but CAR responded quickly, with Sydney Tchibinda scoring a spectacular free kick just four minutes later, their first-ever CHAN goal.
The second half became increasingly intense as Burkina Faso was awarded two penalties amid growing frustration. Abdoul Karim Baguian proved to be the game-changer, winning one of the penalties and later scoring the fourth goal to seal the result. CAR’s Ange Zoumara netted a consolation goal deep into stoppage time, but the damage had already been done.
What’s next for Group B?
With Tanzania leading the group and Burkina Faso close behind, the pressure is mounting as the CHAN 2024 tournament edges closer to the knockout rounds. For debutants CAR, their historic first goal is a sign of promise, but they now face an uphill battle to stay in contention.
