The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Ksh 2.5 million (USD 20,000) following serious security violations during Kenya’s opening CHAN 2024 Group A match against DR Congo at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
What Security Violations Triggered the CAF Fine?
CAF’s disciplinary action was based on a report from its Security Officer detailing breaches of Articles 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. The report cited a stampede at Gate 11, unauthorized entry into restricted Public Security Areas, and a motorcycle maneuvering dangerously through the crowd.
In addition, fans ignited fires behind Block 18 stands, and CAF protocol officers, including a South African President’s security team member, were blocked from accessing the VVIP section by State Security personnel.
These lapses led to three fines:
Ksh 644,500 (USD 5,000) for the stampede and unauthorized access
Ksh 1,289,000 (USD 10,000) for obstructing and assaulting CAF officials
A formal warning over the fires ignited by fans
All fines must be paid within 60 days.
How Does This Impact Kenya’s CHAN 2024 Hosting Role?
CAF has warned of further sanctions if violations continue throughout the tournament, which is jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This scrutiny adds pressure as Harambee Stars prepare to face Angola in their next Group A match on Thursday at 7 PM, again at Kasarani.
Local Organizing Committee chair Nicholas Musonye had previously urged FKF and fans to uphold CAF regulations to avoid jeopardizing the country’s hosting responsibilities. Meanwhile, the Tanzania Football Federation also received a USD 10,000 fine for similar breaches during their match against Burkina Faso at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
