Wanyonyi Clocks 1:42.00 to Win London Diamond League 800m

Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi proved unstoppable once again, dominating the men’s 800m at the London Diamond League on Saturday evening with an eye-catching 1:42.00 finish. His performance held off a strong challenge from Canada’s world champion Marco Arop, who crossed in 1:42.22, and Britain’s Max Burgin, who earned third with a 1:42.36 finish that electrified the home crowd.

Who Were Wanyonyi’s Closest Challengers?

The field was packed with talent, but Wanyonyi managed the race expertly, staying patient through the early laps before delivering a commanding final kick. Arop pushed hard to stay close, but Wanyonyi had enough in the tank to maintain his lead. Burgin, running on home soil, gave fans plenty to cheer about with a well-timed surge for third place.

What Made Koech’s 1500m Victory So Special?

Just minutes after Wanyonyi’s win, his 18-year-old training partner Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech stunned the crowd in the men’s 1500m. Koech crossed the line in 3:28.82, breaking the long-standing meeting record set by Hicham El Guerrouj in 2000. The teenager edged out reigning world champion Josh Kerr (3:29.37), while Portugal’s Isaac Nader came in third at 3:31.55.

Koech, who hails from Kewapmwai village in Uasin Gishu, was running only his third 1500m ever. He had previously clocked a 3:27.72 World U20 record in Paris and followed it with a strong showing in Ostrava. His name now stands tall among global elites in middle-distance running.

Both Wanyonyi and Koech train under coach Claudio Berardelli and are expected to compete at the Kenya trials for the Tokyo 2025 World Championships. The trials will be held at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Tuesday, July 22. All eyes will be on this powerful duo as they prepare for the global stage.
