Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo has survived an impeachment attempt after the Senate voted to uphold his objections against the County Assembly’s ouster motion. The decision allows him to remain in office, though with clear warnings about the road ahead.

Why Was Governor Guyo Facing Impeachment?

The Isiolo County Assembly had accused Governor Guyo of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and violating several laws and constitutional provisions. Among the claims were stalling of major development projects, failure to meet revenue targets, and an inflated county executive. The Assembly alleged that Guyo appointed 36 advisors and 31 chief officers despite Isiolo being among the lowest-funded counties in the country.

Additionally, Guyo faced criticism for issuing short-term, two-year contracts to chief officers, a move the Assembly said created “an environment of fear and uncertainty.” The motion proceeded even though a court had issued an order barring the process.

How Did the Senate Respond?

Governor Guyo presented his defense before the Senate, questioning the legitimacy of the County Assembly’s sittings on June 18 and June 26, during which the impeachment motion was debated and passed. The Senate sided with him, with 31 Senators voting in favor of his objection and 12 against it.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, however, delivered a strong message. “This is not a win, and the Senate does not expect you to go out there chest-thumping. This is a postponement of your case. Depending on how you are going to carry yourself going forward that case may never be heard or may be back here in a matter of days. It’s up to you.”

What’s Next for Isiolo Leadership?

Speaker Kingi urged Guyo to focus on mending broken ties within Isiolo’s leadership. “Clearly, there are cracks in the walls of Isiolo County. If I were you, I’d go mend those cracks. You need to have a sitting with your Senator, even if it’s through a third party. You need to mend your relationship with the County Assembly.”
