What triggered the incident at the hotel?
A quiet Thursday night turned chaotic in Kericho town after a police officer allegedly launched a teargas canister inside a packed hotel, sparking panic and outrage among customers and staff. Eyewitnesses say the officer, dressed in plain clothes and believed to be attached to a nearby station, entered the hotel accompanied by a woman. Shortly after arriving, he began harassing diners who were peacefully enjoying their meals and tea.
Hotel staff and concerned patrons quickly confronted him, demanding his identification and a reason for his behavior. Rather than calming down, the officer escalated the situation by threatening violence and attempting to physically assault staff members. He was subdued by patrons and escorted out of the premises.
How did the teargas attack unfold?
Furious after being ejected, the officer reportedly vowed to return armed and warned those present that he would “shoot them all.” He left on a waiting boda boda, but within minutes, he came back carrying a teargas canister. Without warning, he hurled it into the crowded hotel.
What followed was complete chaos. Patrons and workers scrambled for safety as thick gas quickly filled the room. Some dove under tables, fearing gunfire, while others bolted for the exits in a near stampede. Those unable to escape immediately were left gasping for air, coughing, and rubbing their eyes. Many resorted to pouring water over their faces to ease the burning effects of the gas.
What’s the police response so far?
After the attack, the officer reportedly fled once again on another boda boda, leaving behind a cloud of tear gas and stunned victims. As of Friday morning, senior police officials in Kericho County had yet to issue a formal statement regarding the officer’s identity or the legal consequences he may face.
The disturbing incident has sparked public anger and raised serious concerns about police conduct and accountability. Locals are now demanding swift action and an official explanation from the authorities.
