What Happened Inside the Mlolongo Home During the Protest?

A family in Mlolongo, Machakos County, experienced a terrifying moment on June 25 after a stray bullet ripped through their ceiling during the anti-government protests. The bullet, allegedly fired by police officers attempting to control demonstrators, disrupted the family’s quiet afternoon and left them visibly shaken.

Serede Jami, the head of the household, recounted the experience during an interview with Citizen Digital. “We just had lunch, and it was probably at around 2:00 pm, and I was just chilling on my phone, and my wife was next to me. My daughter was at the desk, and suddenly we heard a loud bang and saw a hole in the ceiling,” he said.

Jami explained that the bullet not only tore through their ceiling but also struck the floor and ricocheted toward the door. Thankfully, no one was physically injured. “Probably the police were shooting up in the air as the protests were happening two kilometres away from my house,” he added.

How Close Were the Protests to Their Home?

Though the demonstrations were reportedly taking place over two kilometers away, the force of the bullet still reached the Jami residence, raising concerns about police crowd control tactics and the use of live ammunition in residential areas.

Jami confirmed that his family was safe but emphasized that such incidents should not happen. He expressed concern for the safety of other families during such operations. “No Kenyan should have to feel unsafe in their own house,” he stated.
