LSK Demands Names of Interdicted Officers in Albert Ojwang’s Death

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is demanding full transparency from Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja over the death of Albert Ojwang. The LSK has called for the immediate release of the names of police officers interdicted in connection with Ojwang’s case, including those responsible for moving him from Homa Bay to Nairobi.

Speaking at a press briefing, LSK President Faith Odhiambo criticized the lack of clarity provided by IG Kanja. While he confirmed that several officers from Central Police Station had been interdicted, their identities remain undisclosed. Odhiambo emphasized that the public deserves to know who these officers are and whether those who transferred Ojwang to Nairobi are among them.

“This secrecy only fuels suspicion,” Odhiambo stated. “Kenyans must be told the truth. We need to know who picked up Ojwang’, if they are among the interdicted, and exactly who those interdicted officers are.”

She added that the IG’s current explanations fall short of resolving public concern, warning that without naming those involved, the move appears to be mere public relations meant to ease public outrage.

Odhiambo condemned the handling of Ojwang’s case, describing his treatment while in custody as a violation of his rights and a reflection of broader issues within the National Police Service. “This is not an isolated case,” she said. “It highlights systemic problems in how law enforcement operates. There is no place in Kenya for extra-judicial killings or abuse by police.”

Outside City Mortuary, protestors and human rights activists gathered, demanding swift justice. The Kenya School of Law President, Joshua Okayo, questioned the decision to move Ojwang 400 kilometers from Homa Bay to Nairobi. He pointed out that Homa Bay has magistrate courts, and there was no justification for such a transfer.

“We want names. We want accountability,” said Okayo. “Start with the OCS of Central Police Station, Mr. Talam. He must be treated as a primary suspect and face murder charges.”

Ojwang’s arrest was linked to a defamation complaint made by Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. An official post-mortem was scheduled for Monday, June 9, at 2 p.m., to determine the cause of death.

The LSK and allied voices continue to press for justice, insisting that naming the involved officers is the first step to restoring trust in the justice system.
