Teen’s Tinder Nightmare
It all started with a bit of teenage curiosity and ended in fear, heartbreak, and police action.
A 17-year-old girl from Nairobi found herself in danger after downloading Tinder, the popular dating app. Encouraged by a classmate to try it out, she had no idea her online chats would lead her into a risky real-life situation.
Within hours of setting up her profile, the teen matched with a 26-year-old man named Bradley Zwane, who turned out to be a South African national staying at a fancy hotel in Westlands. The conversations moved fast, and just days later, the girl disappeared from her home, without telling anyone.
Her parents were frantic. Her mother described the terrifying night after her daughter vanished.
“When my daughter disappeared, I didn’t sleep the entire night,” she said, holding back tears. “I was so afraid. I told myself my child had either been kidnapped or killed.”
By early morning, the worried mom rushed to the school, only to find out from one of her daughter’s friends that the two had been there earlier together. That’s when the family involved the police.
Officers tracked the teen to the Westlands hotel. What they found raised even more alarms. Inside the room, they discovered five Kenyan passports. Four were brand new. One had stamps showing travel to South Africa and Russia. Used condoms were also found at the scene.
Zwane was arrested on the spot. He claimed he didn’t know the girl was underage.
“I asked her how old she was, and she said 18,” he told investigators. “It even said so on her Tinder profile. I asked a few times, and she told me her birthday was just yesterday. She said she had finished high school and was waiting to join university.”
But this explanation didn’t stop questions from flooding in. How did a minor get into a hotel that requires guests to show ID? And what about the passports found in the room?
Zwane told officers that the passports didn’t belong to him.
“They belonged to our company manager who traveled to Europe,” he explained.
Police are now digging into Zwane’s connections to an international betting company, suspecting there may be more going on beneath the surface. As the investigation deepens, the case is raising serious concerns about how easily minors can be targeted online and how predators are misusing dating apps like Tinder.
The girl’s mother, still clearly shaken, made a heartfelt plea.
“That man called me and asked to talk. I begged him, ‘Please don’t ruin my daughter’s life.’ But when I looked at her, she was just 17. If anything had happened to her, how would he have lived with himself? Just let her be.”
Zwane is currently being held at Kibra Police Station. He’s facing serious charges, including defilement.
