In a heartbreaking and alarming case that has shocked the African continent, a mother has been sentenced to life in prison for trafficking her 6-year-old daughter. Kelly Smith, along with her boyfriend, Jacquen Appollis, and their friend Steveno Van Rhyn, were found guilty of kidnapping and selling the little girl, Joshlin Smith, who has been missing since early last year.

Joshlin was last seen in a quiet town in the Western Cape. What followed was a case that captured national attention and broke many hearts.
During the trial, a key witness testified that Kelly Smith admitted she sold her daughter to a sangoma (a traditional healer) for 20,000 rand, which is about $1,100. The child was reportedly sought for her unique features, specifically her eyes and skin. This chilling detail added to the public outcry, especially as the girl still hasn’t been found.
Despite massive police efforts and search operations, there has been no trace of Joshlin. Her disappearance remains a mystery, leaving the country in suspense.
On Thursday, High Court Judge Nathan Erasmus handed down the harshest punishment possible, giving all three life sentences for their roles in the trafficking crime. They also received an additional 10 years in prison for the kidnapping charge. The judge made it clear that their history of drug use did not excuse their actions.
“There is nothing I can find redeeming about these individuals. Nothing justifies a lighter sentence,” Judge Erasmus said during sentencing.
The ruling has sparked fresh calls for stronger child protection laws and raised awareness about human trafficking and ritual crimes in South Africa. Many are also pleading with authorities to continue the search for Joshlin and bring her home if she’s still alive.
