A Catholic priest was shot dead by suspected bandits in the troubled Tot area of Kerio Valley, Elgeyo Marakwet. Father Alloyce Cheruiyot Bett was on his way to conduct a church service when he was ambushed and killed.
The incident has sparked outrage and grief among residents and the broader religious community. Father Bett, known for his dedication to peace and service, became the latest victim in a region plagued by insecurity.
Police have confirmed the killing. Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said a full investigation is underway and that officers are working to identify and capture those responsible. So far, no arrests have been made.

The killing happened during an ongoing security operation in the area. Security forces have been deployed to crack down on violent banditry that has destabilized the region for years. Despite these efforts, attacks have continued, targeting both civilians and, now, shockingly, clergy.
It is a painful reminder that nowhere feels safe anymore. If a priest on his way to church can be targeted, who is truly protected? Marakwets resident stated.
Father Bett’s death has rattled the faith community. He was a symbol of hope in a region that desperately needs it. His sudden and violent end has left many questioning how long this violence will be allowed to go on unchecked.
Community members are calling for action. The government now faces growing pressure to restore order. Security personnel on the ground continue their patrols, but the public demands visibility. They want to see arrests, justice, and an end to this reign of fear.
