A 21-year-old student from the Eldoret National Polytechnic, identified as Winnie Jelagat, has been found dead at her home in Teleview Estate after a suspected self-induced abortion went wrong.
Reports suggest that Jelagat suffered heavy bleeding, losing a significant amount of blood before help could reach her.
What Happened Before Her Death?
According to witnesses, the incident occurred on Thursday morning. Friends who went to check on her became alarmed after their repeated attempts to wake her up went unanswered. When they entered her room, they found her lifeless body.
Neighbors and close friends described a heartbreaking scene: Jelagat was found clutching her phone in one hand, apparently trying to make a call, while her other hand rested on the bed. They believe she attempted to reach out for help but was overcome by pain and blood loss before she could do so.
How Did Authorities Respond?
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed the incident. He urged students across the country to avoid self-harm and instead seek professional medical care when in distress. “This is a painful reminder that young people should not resort to dangerous measures when faced with challenges. Help is always available,” Mwanthi emphasized.
The tragedy has sparked renewed concern over the risks young women face when they turn to unsafe abortion methods. It also raises questions about access to reproductive health services and whether students have adequate information and support to make safe medical decisions.
As investigations continue, Jelagat’s death serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of self-induced procedures and the urgent need for better awareness and access to safe health care.
