A matatu driver has been arrested and charged after a viral video showed his tout performing life-threatening stunts on a moving vehicle, drawing widespread public outrage. The incident, captured on video and circulated online, revealed the conductor hanging on the door rails, swinging, and risking a fatal fall.
What led to the driver’s arrest?
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the driver’s reckless actions contributed to the danger. He reportedly applied sudden braking, sharp turns, and bursts of acceleration that could have easily thrown passengers off balance. The driver was quickly arrested once the footage surfaced, presented in court, and charged with multiple traffic offences. He was later released on a cash bail of Ksh.100,000 or a court bond of Ksh.300,000.
What does NTSA say about passenger safety?
The NTSA emphasized the importance of maintaining safety measures in public transport. “While in the vehicle, passengers, including the conductor must always use seats and seatbelts for their safety,” the authority noted in its statement. Officials praised members of the public for reporting the incident and encouraged continued vigilance to prevent similar occurrences.
Why are stunts like this so dangerous?
Road experts warn that sudden braking, sharp turns, or acceleration make stunts extremely risky, as they can easily throw a person off the vehicle and cause fatal injuries. NTSA reiterated that strict adherence to safety rules is essential, not only for passengers but also for conductors, to avoid turning moments of recklessness into tragedies.
The viral incident has once again raised concerns about dangerous practices in matatus and reinforced the call for safer behavior on Kenya’s roads.
