Benni McCarthy has unveiled a 23-man Harambee Stars squad for the upcoming FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Seychelles. The announcement comes after Kenya’s spirited run at CHAN 2024, where they reached the quarter-finals before a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Madagascar.
Who Made the Cut for McCarthy’s Squad?
Thirteen players from the CHAN 2024 tournament have been retained in the latest call-up. Captain Michael Olunga, who missed the June friendlies against Chad, makes a crucial return to lead the team. Rising talent Job Ochieng from Real Sociedad earns his first senior call-up, while familiar faces like Richard Odada, Timothy Ouma, and William Lenkupae strengthen the midfield and attack.
Among the notable exclusions are Austin Odhiambo, Mohamed Siraj, Daniel Sakari, Chrispine Erambo, and Masoud Juma, all of whom were part of the CHAN squad. Injury has also ruled out dependable full-back Eric “Marcelo” Ouma, who confirmed the setback with a heartfelt message to fans:
“Dear fans, unfortunately, yesterday during our training, I got injured, and the test revealed that I ruptured my Achilles tendon. I would have wished to play for my club and Kenya during the upcoming games, but unfortunately, it is beyond my control. I will do everything to come back stronger than ever. God bless you all.”

Which Foreign-Based Stars Are Included?
Olunga leads the foreign-based contingent after his recent move within Qatar. Odada joins from Dundee United, Ouma from the Czech league, Lenkupae from Finland, and defender Rooney Onyango from Norway. Their experience will be vital in balancing McCarthy’s locally-based squad.
What Awaits Harambee Stars in the Qualifiers?
Kenya will host both fixtures at Kasarani Stadium, facing Gambia on September 5 and Seychelles on September 9. These matches mark the first international break of the 2025/26 season.
Victor Wanyama, who has not been recalled to the squad, praised McCarthy’s leadership, saying the coach brought “confidence to enjoy football” to the team. As Harambee Stars chase World Cup qualification, fans will be looking to see if McCarthy’s blend of experience and young talent can deliver results.
