Clarke Oduor made his debut for Grimsby Town unforgettably as the League Two side shocked Manchester United in the Carabao Cup with a dramatic 12-11 penalty shootout victory at Blundell Park.

How Did Grimsby Knock Out Manchester United?

The Mariners stunned the visitors by going 2-0 up inside 30 minutes through Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren. Manchester United fought back with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, forcing the game into penalties after a tense 2-2 draw in regular time.

Andre Onana, already under pressure for his poor form, was at fault for both goals and struggled to keep his side in the contest. In the shootout, Oduor saw his penalty saved, but Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo’s misses allowed Grimsby to complete one of the biggest upsets in recent Carabao Cup history.

How Did Clarke Oduor Perform in His Grimsby Debut?

Oduor came off the bench in the 73rd minute, just two days after joining Grimsby Town on loan from Bradford. He was deployed behind the striker, working hard to press and link play as the Mariners tried to hold their lead. Despite missing his spot kick, Oduor will forever be associated with a night that lifted the club and its fans.

Coach David Artell praised his side’s spirit, saying: “The lads were terrific. They deserve every plaudit that will come their way. It was a terrific night for the club and the whole community. It’s one we’ve been working towards for a long time to get this football club back on the map.”

What Comes Next for Oduor and Grimsby?

The 26-year-old Kenyan international was not included in Benni McCarthy’s latest Harambee Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, but his debut in England’s Carabao Cup will be remembered as a turning point in Grimsby Town’s modern history. The victory marked their first meeting with Manchester United since 1948, ensuring this clash will be etched into the club’s story for decades to come.
