“Such Behavior Is Not Condoned”: Maasai Mara Clarifies Tourists’ Wildebeest Crossing Incident

The Maasai Mara National Reserve has issued a clarification after a viral video appeared to show tourists obstructing a wildebeest crossing. The clip, which sparked outrage online, captured visitors stepping out of safari vehicles and crowding the riverbank, forcing wildebeests back into a crocodile-infested river.

Chief Warden Stephen Ole Minis explained that the incident occurred at Purungat (South) Bridge, a designated rest and viewing area where guests are permitted to leave their vehicles under the escort of armed rangers. The location also features sanitary facilities and serves as a viewing point for hippos.

What Exactly Happened at Purungat Bridge?

According to Minis, the bridge had flooded on that day, and vehicles were waiting for the water to subside and logs to clear when wildebeests suddenly began crossing. Tourists, who had alighted as usual at the site, were caught in the unexpected movement of the animals.

“During this waiting period, guests alighted as is usual at this location. The situation was immediately addressed by myself and rangers on site, who promptly instructed all visitors to return to their vehicles. This was done within a minute, which is why the circulating video is brief,” said Minis.

He confirmed that no animals were harmed and that the incident was resolved quickly.

How Is the Maasai Mara Handling the Situation?

Minis emphasized that while the video fueled public concern, the Reserve does not condone such behavior. “I have already engaged the guides who were present, and they committed to adherence to Reserve rules and to prevent a repeat of such incidents,” he stated.

Were Tourists Asked for Money?

The warden also addressed claims that visitors were asked for money to access the site. He dismissed the allegations as unverified, assuring that disciplinary action would follow once the matter is fully investigated.

The Maasai Mara, renowned globally for the Great Wildebeest Migration, continues to urge guests to respect wildlife and follow all Reserve regulations to ensure both human safety and animal protection.
