Kenya’s national football team kicked off their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign with a major boost after defeating two-time champions DR Congo 1-0 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Former Harambee Stars captain and assistant coach Musa Otieno has now thrown his full support behind the team, confidently stating that they have what it takes to reach the final.
What Did Musa Otieno Say About Kenya’s CHAN Start?
Austin Odhiambo scored the only goal of the match just before halftime, giving Kenya a crucial victory in their opening group game. Speaking after the match, Otieno emphasized the mental strength and resilience shown by the team in such a high-pressure fixture.
“Sunday was a very big day for the Harambee Stars and all Kenyans because it was not easy for them, especially mentally. You know it was the first match and it is this big CHAN tournament,” Otieno said. “They fought hard and got the victory, which is the most important thing because in a tournament, the most important thing is to win the first match, especially if you are at home.”
Otieno praised the players’ determination and encouraged fans to show up in large numbers to support the team moving forward. “Heading into the next match, they know how to motivate each other and especially the fans. People will now want to come to the stadium in large numbers to witness their games and that will increase their morale, and as a Kenyan, I say I am proud of their result on Sunday, kudos to the boys.”
Kenya will play their second group stage match against Angola on Thursday at 7 PM under the floodlights. A victory in that game would put Harambee Stars in a strong position to secure a quarter-final spot in what is their debut appearance at the CHAN tournament. With momentum on their side and strong home support, the team is eyeing a historic run, and Musa Otieno believes they’re more than capable of going all the way.
