A stained, rhinestone-covered sock once worn by Michael Jackson has just been sold for a jaw-dropping Ksh.1.04 million ($8,822) at an auction in Nîmes, France. The item, a white athletic sock worn during the late pop icon’s 1997 “HIStory World Tour,” drew intense attention from collectors and fans alike.

Why Was Michael Jackson’s Sock So Valuable?

The sock was discovered discarded near Jackson’s dressing room after his July 1997 concert in the southern French city. According to auctioneer Aurore Illy, the item is nothing short of “exceptional” and “a cult object for Michael Jackson fans.” Though originally valued between €3,000 and €4,000, it ended up selling for €7,688 (approximately Ksh.1.04 million), more than double the expected price.

The sock shows signs of aging, yellowed rhinestones, and visible stains, but for die-hard fans of the “King of Pop,” its condition only adds to its authenticity and allure. Photos of the item on interencheres.com reveal its time-worn but iconic appearance.

What Makes Jackson’s Memorabilia So Popular?

Michael Jackson remains one of the most collectible figures in music history. A hat worn just before his legendary 1983 moonwalk performance sold for over $80,000 in 2023, while a glittery glove from that same era fetched $350,000 at a 2009 auction held by a Macau gaming resort. Despite controversy surrounding his life, including allegations of child molestation, which he and his estate have repeatedly denied, Jackson’s cultural influence and devoted fan base continue to drive demand for his memorabilia.
