DCI Arrests TikToker Kakan Maiyo for Alleged Incitement Against Police

Why Was TikTok Creator Kakan Maiyo Arrested?
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested popular TikTok personality and businessman Godfrey Mwasiaga Kakan Maiyo over allegations of inciting violence against police officers and their families. Known online for his outspoken criticism of government failures and police brutality, Maiyo was tracked to his office located in Kimathi House, Nairobi, where he operates LetaPeleka Logistics.

“Detectives trailed the suspect to Kimathi House, where he was operating a discreet office under the name LetaPeleka Logistics. He is currently in custody undergoing processing, pending arraignment,” the DCI said in a statement released early Thursday morning.

A video circulating online shows three plainclothes officers forcefully pinning Maiyo against a corridor wall before escorting him away. His arrest sparked widespread conversation online, with supporters questioning the government’s handling of free speech.

What Did Maiyo Say That Led to His Arrest?
One of Maiyo’s most viral videos contains a direct warning to security forces reportedly behind the enforced disappearances of government critics. “A time is coming when you will go to abduct someone and you will not return to your stations alive. Mark my words,” he says. He adds, “The wrath of God is upon this government. When it strikes, none of you who have been involved in the abductions of Kenyans will survive. Your families will cry the same tears these families have cried.”

He continued, “No amount of arrest, abduction, or killing will silence Kenyans. It is a waste of time.” Authorities argue that these remarks cross the line from free speech into incitement.

How Has the Government Responded to Threats Against Police?
President William Ruto, speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday, gave a firm warning to anyone attacking law enforcement. “Those who attack our police, security installations, including police stations, are declaring war. It is terrorism, and we are going to deal with you firmly. We cannot have a nation run by terror and governed by violence; it will not happen under my watch,” he said.

Ruto also ordered that protesters found vandalizing or looting during demonstrations be shot in the leg. “Anyone who burns down someone else’s business and property, let them be shot in the leg and go to the hospital as they head to court. Yes, let them not kill, but shoot and break the legs. Destroying people’s property is not right,” he stated.
