Ruto Warns Against Coup Plot, Vows to Defend Presidency Until 2027

President William Ruto has issued a stern warning to those he claims are plotting to remove him from office through unconstitutional means. Speaking on Wednesday at Kilimani Police Station after inspecting a police housing project, Ruto said he would not tolerate attempts to force him out using violence.

What Did Ruto Say About Plans to Oust Him?

“I want to tell those characters giving us lectures that they can change this administration using violence and unlawful means before 2027, let them try,” Ruto declared. Visibly agitated, the president said the time for silence was over, adding, “This is a democratic nation and Kenyans will choose the nation’s leadership through the ballot. We cannot choose leadership through violence. That is not going to happen in this country.”

Why Is Ruto Comparing His Tenure to Past Leaders?

Ruto questioned the targeted aggression toward his administration, referencing Kenya’s previous presidents. “They are telling me about Moi… he was a president, the same way Kibaki was a president, same as Uhuru, so where is all this coming from? That is nonsense! Why didn’t they cause chaos during Kibaki’s time or Uhuru’s? Why are you causing this during my time? That needs to stop,” he said.

He insisted that the current unrest is not rooted in democratic principles but is being driven by unlawful political interests. “Anyone going to attack a police station in Kenya, that is a declaration of war. It is not acceptable. Enough is enough. I will protect the property and the lives of Kenyans,” he added.

What’s Behind Ruto’s Strong Response?

His comments come after nationwide protests that began on June 12, 2025, some of which turned violent. Businesses were vandalized, civilians were injured, and several protesters lost their lives. Ruto claimed that politically sponsored groups infiltrated the demonstrations to create chaos and undermine national stability.

“Those who were found looting people’s businesses will be dealt with by the law, and they will all be arrested, and we are going after those sponsoring them,” he warned. The president reaffirmed his commitment to protecting national security, saying he would “use whatever means that are available” to restore peace and hold perpetrators accountable.
