What Happened to Magunas Supermarket During Saba Saba Protests?
Magunas Supermarket, a major retail hub in Meru, was torched during the nationwide protests that marked the 35th anniversary of the Saba Saba movement. The supermarket, known for being the only 24-hour retail store in Meru and offering affordable prices, was reduced to ashes, leaving the local community in shock. Influencer Baba Talisha expressed his sorrow on social media, posting a photo of the burning store and extending his sympathies to the owner and affected workers.

The destruction of Magunas deeply affects the Meru economy. The supermarket has long been a lifeline for many small businesses and families, both as a source of goods and employment. Baba Talisha’s message resonated with many Kenyans online who shared their frustration and heartbreak.

How Did Kenyans React to the Loss?
Kenyans flooded social media with emotional responses. One user wrote, “The only 24-hour supermarket in Meru with the most affordable prices. A supermarket started by blood, sweat and tears by a former hawker. What was the thought process involved here, Meru people?”
@Mutetimutegi posted, “There must be something else beneath this… We saw the govt of criminals hire their own kind to loot shops in Nairobi. They must have sent the criminals to other parts of the country to do the same.”
Others called for an end to the destruction. Emmi Ene Kononkoi urged, “Gen Z do you really think this will help? If you don’t want the president, just make sure you have an ID so you vote him out in 2027. This is not necessary and it’s not going to make things better.”
