Where Did the Fatal Police Shootings Occur During the Protests?
At least four people were shot dead by police on Monday during Saba Saba protests held across different parts of Kenya. The fatalities were reported in Kitengela, Kangemi, and Olkalou as security forces cracked down on demonstrators.

In Kitengela, a 21-year-old man lost his life after being shot. Three others sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to Kitengela Subcounty Hospital. The situation escalated when angry residents stormed the facility, threatening to burn it down. Nurses had to flee for safety, and the wounded were quickly transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital by Red Cross personnel.

In Nairobi’s Kangemi area, two protesters succumbed to gunshot injuries at Eagle Hospital, according to doctors at the scene. The clashes between demonstrators and police in the area were intense, leading to multiple injuries.

In Olkalou’s Tumaini area, one person was killed while another was left seriously injured during confrontations with the police. Authorities confirmed that a police officer was also seriously wounded in the chaos.

What Sparked the Violence During Saba Saba Protests?
The protests were part of the annual Saba Saba Day, marking the July 7, 1990, pro-democracy movement. However, this year’s demonstrations have been driven by public outrage over issues such as governance, police brutality, and economic hardship.

Despite calls for peaceful protests, heavy police deployment and use of live ammunition escalated tensions, leading to deadly outcomes in multiple counties.

What Is the Government’s Response So Far?
As of now, authorities have not issued an official statement addressing the use of live bullets or the mounting casualties. Civil society groups and medical officials are calling for accountability, with investigations likely to follow. Human rights organizations are also documenting the incidents amid growing concern over the state’s response to public dissent.
