When will Boniface Kariuki be laid to rest?
The family of Boniface Kariuki, the young mask vendor who tragically died after being shot in the head during recent protests, has confirmed that his burial will take place on Friday, July 11. He will be laid to rest at his rural home in Kangema, Murang’a County. Kariuki’s death, which came after he was declared brain dead, has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for accountability in cases of police brutality.
According to his cousin Emily, who spoke on behalf of the family, organizing the funeral has been both emotionally and financially overwhelming. Despite the pain, the family is determined to give Boniface a dignified send-off and had been appealing for public support to help meet the costs.

How did Mike Sonko support Kariuki’s family?
While attending Boniface’s autopsy at the Nairobi Funeral Home, the family met representatives from former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko. The encounter quickly led to a phone call with Sonko himself, who offered to step in and ease the family’s burden. “The family looked somehow burdened by the huge funeral costs to grant the late Boniface a decent send-off. They requested for our support, and as usual, we didn’t hesitate to step in and offer our support. Pole sana na tuko pamoja tutawasaidia,” Sonko wrote on social media.
Sonko pledged to cover several funeral expenses, including a modern hearse, a white casket, and medical-related costs. He also promised to buy a burial suit for Kariuki and sent KSh 150,000 to help the family with food and other arrangements. This came in addition to the KSh 100,000 the family had already raised.
