Why Was Babu Owino’s Security Detail Withdrawn?
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has strongly opposed the government’s decision to withdraw his official security, linking the action to his prominent role in the June 25 protests. “This is not just an attack on me, but on democracy itself,” Babu posted on social media. He sees the withdrawal as a deliberate attempt to intimidate leaders who side with public dissent and participate in nationwide demonstrations.
The outspoken legislator, who has gained popularity among Kenya’s youth, joined thousands across the country to commemorate victims of police brutality, both recent and from the 2024 Finance Bill protests. His involvement, for the second consecutive year, reflects his continued commitment to grassroots activism and public mobilization.
How Has Babu Owino Engaged in Protests and Activism?
During last year’s protests, Babu Owino famously jumped over the National Assembly fence to stand with youth on the streets, even as many of his colleagues stayed sheltered inside Parliament. This bold act earned him praise from protestors and cemented his image as a leader willing to risk political consequences to echo public frustration.
This year, he again marched through Nairobi with demonstrators, calling for justice for those who lost their lives in encounters with law enforcement. “When elected representatives are punished for standing with the people, it is a sign of a government that fears accountability, not one that serves,” he said.
What Message Is Babu Owino Sending to Kenyans?
Despite losing his official security, Babu remains defiant. He emphasized that he would not be silenced and vowed to continue holding the government accountable. In a strong message to the public, he stated, “To the public: stay alert, stay united, and know that your leaders should answer to you, not threaten those who stand beside you. The truth cannot be suppressed. The justice movement cannot be stopped. We will not back down.”
