President Yoweri Museveni will once again run for Uganda’s top seat in the upcoming elections set for early next year, according to a senior official from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. The confirmation ends months of speculation and reaffirms the 80-year-old’s intention to extend his nearly four-decade rule.

What Did the NRM Say About Museveni’s Candidacy?

The announcement came from Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the NRM’s electoral commission, in a video posted by state broadcaster UBC on social media.

“The president … will pick up expression-of-interest forms for two positions, one for chairperson of the party and the other to contest if he is given the chance for presidential flag bearer,” Odoi said.

Museveni, who first took office in 1986, is Africa’s fourth-longest-serving leader. His NRM party has amended Uganda’s constitution twice to eliminate both age and term limits, allowing him to seek continued re-election.

Candidate vetting for the 2026 polls is currently ongoing within the NRM and other parties, with Museveni expected to formally declare once internal processes conclude.

Who Are Museveni’s Main Challengers?

Musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is widely regarded as Museveni’s most formidable opponent. He came second in the 2021 elections and has already announced his 2026 candidacy.

Wine rejected the 2021 election outcome, citing widespread ballot stuffing, intimidation, and violence by security forces. His campaign galvanized younger Ugandans and opposition supporters, but his efforts to unseat Museveni were met with a heavy security crackdown.

How Has Museveni Maintained Power?

Human rights activists and critics have consistently accused Museveni of using state resources, patronage networks, and the military to suppress dissent and cling to power. The president, however, maintains that his extended tenure is rooted in overwhelming popular support and national stability.
