A murder case linked to the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Were took a shocking twist in court this week. During a court session on Wednesday, one of the suspects made headlines not just for the case itself, but for allegedly threatening to kill the prosecutor handling it.
The suspect, Ebel Ochieng Kalo, is a well-known figure. He serves on the board of the Lake Basin Development Authority and is a top United Democratic Alliance (UDA) official. Kalo was in court for a hearing at the Milimani Law Courts, where he appeared before Justice Diana Kavedza.
But what shocked the courtroom wasn’t just the serious charges. According to the prosecution, Kalo turned to Allen Mulama, a prosecutor with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and threatened to kill him. The threat came after Mulama opposed Kalo’s release on bond.
“One of the accused persons, Ebel Ochieng, has threatened to kill the ODPP officer, Allan Mulama,” the prosecution told the judge. The threat forced Mulama to leave the courtroom, causing tension among everyone present.
In response, Justice Kavedza ordered tighter security and took the threat very seriously. “The mere utterance of the words ‘huyu tutamuua’, what about the witnesses?” she asked before denying bond to Kalo and two other suspects.
Kalo was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation at Mathari Hospital. All three suspects are now being held at Nairobi Remand Prison, with one of them kept in isolation until assessments are complete. The next court session is set for June 17.
Meanwhile, two other suspects, Isaack Kuria and Allan Omondi Ogolla, are also in custody in connection with the murder. Justice Margaret Muigai, in a separate virtual session, ordered both men to undergo mental checks and receive legal representation. They’re being held at Kamiti Maximum Prison as investigations continue.
MP Charles Were was killed on April 30, 2025, in a brazen attack near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi. According to police, a gunman got off a motorbike during a red light and shot the MP at close range before escaping with the rider.
Investigators believe the murder was planned by a wider criminal syndicate. Among the prime suspects are Were’s bodyguard and driver, raising serious questions about betrayal from within.
