What Kenya Risks Losing If It Pushes the US Away Over China Deals

Kenya is playing a high-stakes game on the global stage, but what happens if it pushes the United States out in favor of cozying up to China? That’s the million-dollar question after President William Ruto’s recent Beijing trip.

Senator Jim Risch from the US Senate didn’t mince words. Ruto’s praise of China as a partner in building “a new world order” set off alarm bells in Washington. This isn’t just about business deals or investments. It’s about where Kenya’s loyalties might be shifting and why that matters more than ever.

Why should Kenyans care?

The US isn’t just some distant power; it’s been a key ally, especially on security. Kenya’s major non-NATO ally status unlocked military cooperation and access to advanced weaponry that keeps the region stable. But if Washington starts doubting Nairobi’s allegiance, which support could dry up or come with strings attached, that could squeeze Kenya’s options.

International relations expert Austine Wambingwa warns that Congress could slow down military funding or slap tough conditions on Kenya’s security partnerships, like the crucial Manda Bay base. Kenya might find itself under the same scrutiny Egypt and Ethiopia faced when they took steps Washington didn’t like.

So, is Kenya choosing sides?

Analysts like Bravin Onditi see Ruto’s approach as smart, he’s playing both sides, trying to get the best from China’s billions in infrastructure investments and the US’s security umbrella. It’s a tightrope walk between pragmatism and politics.

China is Kenya’s biggest trading partner now, funding roads, railways, and energy projects that power the country’s growth. Ruto’s billion-dollar deals in Beijing show he’s serious about these investments. At the same time, he wants Kenya to be a global bridge, demanding a fairer economic system that works for everyone.

But here’s the catch. Can Kenya keep the US and China happy at the same time?

Or will choosing one mean losing the other? Because the truth is, Washington isn’t likely to sit quietly if it feels sidelined.

Kenya’s future depends on how well it balances this diplomatic dance. Play it right, and it’s a win-win. Mess it up, and Kenya could lose more than just money it might lose influence, security, and trust on the world stage.
