Murang’a Pastor James Irungu Attempts 80-Hour Tree Hug to Break Truphena’s Record

Kenyan Pastor James Irungu, popularly known as Jimmy, has embarked on an ambitious 80-hour-long tree-hugging attempt in Murang’a, aiming to surpass Truphena Muthoni’s recent 72-hour record. The Murang’a-based evangelist began the challenge on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at 9:27 pm, and is expected to finish on Thursday, January 9, 2026, at 5:27 pm.

What inspired Jimmy’s tree-hugging attempt?

Jimmy’s attempt comes just weeks after environmental activist Truphena Muthoni successfully spent 72 continuous hours hugging a tree. Her record went viral and earned her significant national recognition. In a post on his official X account on Monday, December 15, 2025, President William Ruto announced that he had awarded Truphena the Head of State’s Commendation (HSC) for her “exemplary service to environmental stewardship.”

President Ruto praised Truphena, stating, “Truphena Muthoni is an exemplary young Kenyan whose dedication and determination embody the very best of our nation’s spirit.” He recognized that her 72-hour tree-hugging effort was a symbolic act aimed at raising awareness of environmental conservation and climate change, both nationally and globally.

In addition to the HSC, Truphena was appointed as Ambassador of the 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, a national initiative focused on securing Kenya’s environmental future. Ruto also announced that the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Tourism Board had extended a fully sponsored holiday experience to Truphena and her team in recognition of her inspiring efforts.

How does this challenge impact environmental awareness?

Jimmy’s 80-hour challenge builds on Truphena’s momentum, highlighting the role of symbolic acts in raising public attention to environmental causes. Such initiatives encourage Kenyans and global audiences alike to engage with conservation efforts and rethink human interactions with nature. While the attempt is physically demanding, it also serves as a creative platform to promote tree planting, environmental responsibility, and climate action across the country.

As Jimmy continues his record-breaking attempt, many are watching closely to see if he can outlast Truphena’s 72 hours, while contributing to a growing culture of environmental activism in Kenya.
