Visually impaired digital content creator and advocate Julius Mbura, widely known as Julio Supercharge, has spoken openly about the stigma, misconceptions, and online abuse he faces because of his visual impairment. By sharing his daily life and passions on social media, Julio has built a public platform that celebrates independence and confidence. At the same time, that visibility has exposed him to criticism from people who struggle to understand disability beyond outdated stereotypes.
In a candid interview with K24 Digital, Julio explained that many people doubt his blindness simply because he lives an active and expressive life. His content often features hobbies that society does not traditionally associate with visually impaired individuals, which has fueled skepticism and judgment online.
“Very much so, especially since I live a public life on social media, sharing my passions: cars, cooking, driving, riding motorbikes, skating, cycling, hiking,” Julio shared.
He added, “I challenge the norm of what people think blind people should be. Because I embrace independence, confidence, and even fashion, people sometimes can’t believe I’m blind.”
Julio went on to explain that his physical appearance also plays a role in the doubts people express. His posture, confidence, and movement often lead strangers to assume that he does not fit their narrow idea of what blindness looks like.
“My eyes show no signs of blindness, since my condition affects the back of the eye. My body posture and movements are deliberate,” he added.
“I’m intentional about walking upright and presenting myself with confidence. That, plus doing daring activities, makes some people think I’m faking blindness.”
Why do people doubt visually impaired creators online?
Julio’s experience highlights a broader issue rooted in how society views disability. Many people are conditioned to associate visual impairment with visible signs, dependency, or limitation. When someone defies those assumptions, disbelief often follows. For creators like Julio, this disbelief frequently turns into harmful online commentary.
The content creator revealed that he has faced repeated cyberbullying, with commenters accusing him of pretending or being dishonest about his condition.
“I’ve faced stigma and cyberbullying. Many comments accuse me of pretending or being a fraud. But I take it positively; I know people are conditioned to see persons with disabilities as fragile or inferior,” Julio disclosed.
Rather than retreating from public spaces, Julio has chosen to respond through education and consistency. He uses his platform to challenge fixed mindsets and to show that disability does not cancel ambition, confidence, or joy.
“I use those moments to educate. Sometimes I reply to comments to challenge people’s mindsets. I want to shift perceptions, to show that disability does not define how we must act, look, or think,” he added.
How Julio Supercharge is helping end disability stigma
Julio believes that visibility is a powerful tool for change. Through his online content, he demonstrates how visually impaired people navigate daily life independently. His work extends beyond inspiration, focusing on practical education that benefits both disabled and non-disabled audiences.
He noted that his openness has already begun to change attitudes, particularly through his “Blind Corner” segment, where he shares everyday life hacks.
“My openness has gone a long way. Through my ‘Blind Corner’ segment, I show hacks of how blind people live independently. Many people comment that I inspire them or that I’ve educated them about things they never knew.”
This impact extends beyond awareness. Julio explained that his content gives confidence to other visually impaired individuals, encouraging them to live openly and even create content of their own. His message is clear and consistent. Visually impaired people can live fulfilling lives, pursue bold passions, and define success on their own terms. At the same time, society must evolve in how it understands and respects disability.
